I am a native of North Carolina and grew up in the northeastern part of our state in the farming community of Belvidere. My mother retired from the local public school system as a teacher assistant, and my father was a part-time farmer in addition to working in various agricultural related businesses in our community. I learned a strong work ethic early, as well as the importance of faith and taking care of neighbors and the environment, by growing up on a family farm in rural North Carolina.
After high school, I attended NC State and East Carolina universities. With the support of my parents and the help from scholarships, financial aid, and part-time jobs, I earned a doctorate degree and became a school psychologist. After graduation, I worked in a number of public schools and districts in our state (including Wake County) providing mental health services to children and families, and consultation services to teachers and administrators.
I have lived, worked, learned, and played in Wake County for over 30 years now. My husband, Mark, and I have lived in Zebulon, Raleigh, and now Apex. We chose Apex as the place to raise our son Charlie because of the good schools, friendly people, and small town charm – especially in the downtown area.
I am proud that Charlie is a product of the Wake County Public School System and the UNC university system (having recently graduated with a Computer Science degree at UNC-Charlotte and now working on an MBA at UNC-Chapel Hill).
When Charlie was a preschooler, I transitioned into a Raleigh private practice in an effort to balance my professional work with being a mother. I have been a co-owner of the practice since 2000, thus being a small business owner and provider of mental health services to the broader Wake County and Triangle region for over 20 years.
In 2019, I ran and won a seat on the Apex Town Council. I have very much enjoyed my time on the Council working to address quality of life issues that are important to residents. Specific focus has been on our local government response to residents, businesses, and Town Staff in managing the COVID pandemic since March 2020 as well as improving infrastructure; environmental leadership and sustainability; responsible development that integrates school capacity and traffic needs; and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
In addition to my professional work and serving on the Apex Town Council, I manage the care for my brother with disabilities. He was involved in a serious car accident in 1985 when he was 21 as the result of the poor choices of a drinking driver. He sustained a traumatic brain injury, and has had a number of health challenges over the years (including the need for 2 organ transplants - liver in 2012, kidney in 2017). I donated the kidney for his second transplant surgery, and am so grateful for the many wonderful health care providers in our state who have partnered with us in this journey.
In sum, I believe these personal and professional experiences have given me a sound skill set to serve as a Wake County Commissioner. I look forward to this opportunity of expanded service to the residents of Wake County as we strive to provide equitable access and opportunity for a healthy economy, community, and environment for all.
Public service for the public good – I’m all in! I would appreciate your vote, Cheryl Stallings for Wake County Commissioner, District 3.
